little miss sunshine review

a review of the movie little miss sunshine.

I think I'm having Dad issues. I discovered this after viewing the latest indiesque offering from the US "Little Miss Sunshine".

With a fine ensemble cast and obligatory quirkiness Little Miss Sunshine, directed by music video royalty Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, proved to be as promising as anything that indie darling Wes Anderson has done in the recent past.

But getting back to the fatherhood topic. Like Andersons Films, Sunshine has a strong sense of dysfunctionality with particular emphasis on the relationship between father and son. My eye was drawn towards the duel between Richard (played by the ever reliable Greg Kinnear) and 'Grandpa' (a scene stealing Alan Arkin), the two jostling for patriarchal position which seems all to familiar to this reviewer.

It's a simple story, effectively told with 'A list' cast reveling in the well scripted material. Suprises come in the form of young cast members Paul Dano (who will be next appearing in the much anticipated Spike Jonze fantasy "Where the Wild things are") and in the title role, pocket sized powerhouse Abigail Breslin who is best known for her role in the god-awful M. Night Shyamalan wank-fest 'Signs'.

The film will make you laugh -- no question, but I found that it also had a melancholy center that led me to think about it for days to come. With thoughtful direction, well balanced performances and thoroughly enjoyable story Little Miss Sunshine will have a welcome place in the collection when available on DVD and I can't wait to see the next offering from directors Dayton and Faris.

It's a must see but be warned -- it's more darkness than sunshine. (4 stars)

humo - The Smashing pumpkins - "Tonight, Tonight"

Dierect by: jonathon Dyton & Valerie Faris

Méliès-inspired, 1920's-Film-Influenced video for Tonight
Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins.
The Smashing Pumpkins hold a large place in the area of 90s rock.
Many people have said that they are part of the second wave of
"grunge" bands, and are second rate compared to the likes of Nirvana,
Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc.
The Smashing Pumpkins, though, were very different from those bands,
as those bands were different from each other. Siamese Dream proved
the Smashing Pumpkins a band to be reckoned with, and is esteemed by
critics and fans alike as one of the best albums of the 90s.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the Smashing Pumpkins'
third album, a 28 song, two disc opus that lays itself as a roadmap
through genres and styles.
