Diana Ross - Swept Away (Hot Track Extended Mix)

1984's biggest-hit "Swept Away" by Diana Ross. this was made from the "Hot Tracks remix version" recording.

Review.- Diane Ross (born Diane Ernestine Earle Ross on March 26, 1944 and raised in Detroit, Michigan, although her family briefly lived in Bessemer, Alabama due to her mother's illness) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress, whose musical repertoire spans R&B, soul, pop, disco, and jazz. Ross first gained prominence as lead singer of the girl group The Supremes, before establishing a successful solo career in 1970.

After a half-year of recording material with various producers, Ross settled with the production team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the creative force behind Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's hit duets. Ashford and Simpson helmed most of Ross' first album, Diana Ross, and would continue to write and produce for Ross for the next decade. In May 1970, Diana Ross was released on Motown. The first single, the gospel-influenced "Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)", peaked at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album's second single, a cover of Gaye and Terrell's 1967 hit "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", was an international hit, and gave Ross her first #1 pop single as a solo artist. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" garnered Ross a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.

In 1971, Motown released Ross's second album Everything is Everything, which garnered Ross's first UK number one solo single, "I'm Still Waiting". Several months later, Ross released Surrender, which garnered the top 20 pop hit, "Remember Me". That year, Ross hosted her first solo TV special, Diana!. Featuring guest appearances by The Jackson 5, Bill Cosby and Danny Thomas, Ross' special continued her popularity with her middle of the road fan base.

By this point, Motown Records had relocated to the West Coast, specifically Hollywood. Berry Gordy decided it was time the company ventured out once more in new territory, so he focused much of his attention on developing a motion pictures company and set his sights on making Ross a movie star.

She returned to record-making with the Top Ten album Touch Me in the Morning (June 1973) and its chart-topping title song. This was followed by a duet album with Marvin Gaye, Diana & Marvin (October 1973), that produced three chart hits. Ross acted in her second movie, Mahogany (October 1975), and it brought her another chart-topping single in the theme song, "Do You Know Where You're Going To." That and her next number one, the disco-oriented "Love Hangover" (March 1976), were featured on her second album to be titled simply Diana Ross (February 1976), which rose into the Top Ten.

Ross' third film role came in The Wiz (October 1978). The Boss (May 1979) was a gold-selling album, followed by the platinum-selling Diana (May 1980) (the second of her solo albums with that name, though the other, a 1971 TV soundtrack, had an exclamation mark). It featured the number one single "Upside Down" and the Top Ten hit "I'm Coming Out."

Ross scored a third Top Ten hit in 1980 singing the title theme from the movie It's My Turn. She then scored the biggest hit of her career with another movie theme, duetting with Lionel Richie on "Endless Love" (June 1981). It was her last big hit on Motown; after more than 20 years, she decamped for RCA. She was rewarded immediately with a million-selling album, titled after her remake of the old Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers hit, "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," which became her next Top Ten hit. The album also included the Top Ten hit "Mirror, Mirror."

Silk Electric (October 1982) was a gold-seller, featuring the Top Ten hit "Muscles," written and produced by Michael Jackson, and Swept Away (September 1984) was another successful album, containing the hits "Swept Away" and "Missing You," but Ross had trouble selling records in the second half of the 1980s. The next album was "Eaten Alive" (1985) that including the UK number-one single, "Chain Reaction" (1986). Hit albums during this period included the gold-certified albums, Silk Electric and Swept Away, the latter being the last top forty charted album in Ross' career for two decades. While Ross continued to have success overseas as the 1980s continued, she began to struggle on the United States Billboard Hot 100 chart.

By 1989, she had returned to Motown, and by 1993 was turning more to pop standards, notably on the concert album Diana Ross Live: The Lady Sings...Jazz & Blues, Stolen Moments (April 1993).

Additionally, Ross has been nominated for twelve Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Actress. With 45 years of career, her albums and singles sales are estimated in more than 100 million copies, easily putting her high on the list of best-selling music artists.

Paul Laurence - Cut the Crap (Featuring Janice Dempsey)

Paul Laurence - Cut the Crap (Featuring Janice Dempsey) from 'Underexposed' 1989
------------

Biography:
Songwriter/producer/keyboardist Paul Laurence had seven number one R&B hits: Freddie Jackson's "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)," "Jam Tonight," "Tasty Love," "Hey Lover," "Do Me Again"; Stephanie Mills' "(You're Putting) A Rush on Me"; and Meli'sa Morgan's "Do Me Baby." His other credits include Evelyn King's (her label RCA suggested that she drop "Champagne") summer 1981 number one R&B hit "I'm in Love," her number one R&B hit "Love Come Down," "Don't Hide Our Love," and "Get Loose," as well as hits by Lillo Thomas.

Laurence and Jackson attended school and church together at Harlem's White Rock Baptist Church, which is where the duo met in the '70s. Laurence had been taught piano by a fellow church member Valerie Simpson of the hit songwriting team Ashford and Simpson. Laurence started a group, Laurence Jones Ensemble, which included Jackson, and they performed in New York-area clubs. By the '80s, both Laurence and Jackson were working for manager Beau Higgins' Hush Productions. Laurence had written Hush signee Melba Moore's "Love's Comin' at Ya" (number five R&B, summer 1982), "Keepin' My Lover Satisfied," and "Love Me Right" and would go on to co-write with Ondrea Dawkins-Duverney the enchanting ballad "I'm Not Gonna Let You Go." Jackson was one of Moore's background singers. He also sang on demos of Laurence's songs.

By fall 1982, Jackson had signed as a Hush artist and began recording his debut album. Laurence wrote a swaying ballad, "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)," especially for Jackson and played keyboards and programmed drums on the track. Also on the date was bassist Timmy Allen, guitarist Mike "Dino" Campbell, and background vocalist Reggie King. Huggins got Jackson a record deal with Capitol Records, the same label Melba Moore was signed to. "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)" became an instant smash, staying at number one R&B for six weeks on Billboard's charts during summer 1985. The album, Rock Me Tonight, went platinum, hitting number one R&B, number ten pop in summer 1985.

Laurence produced a cover of Prince's "Do Me Baby" for fellow Hush signee and Capitol recording artist Meli'sa Morgan. The ballad parked at number one R&B for three weeks in early 1986. Laurence co-wrote "Tasty Love" with Freddie Jackson, which held the number one R&B position for four weeks in late 1986. A week earlier Jackson was in the number one R&B spot on a duet with Melba Moore, "A Little Bit More." "Tasty Love" was Jackson's fourth number one R&B single included on his platinum LP, Just Like the First Time, number one R&B. Another single from the album, "Jam Tonight" was another Laurence/Jackson song and years earlier was one of the songs that got the attention of Melba Moore during one of Jackson's club appearances. She then hired Jackson as a background vocalist. "Jam Tonight" jumped to number one R&B in summer 1987 and became a steppers classic. In late 1988, Laurence produced Jackson's eighth number one R&B hit "Hey Lover" written by singer Keith Washington (number one R&B hit "Missing You," "Candlelight and You") and Sonny Moore. The smooth number was on Jackson's gold number one R&B LP Don't Let Love Slip Away. Other Laurence/Jackson hits were "Do Me Again" (Laurence/Humphrey/Jones/Dash), a number one R&B hit in early 1991, and "Main Course," a number two R&B hit from spring 1991 (from the LP Do Me Again).

For former Broadway star and hit recording artist Stephanie Mills, Laurence produced and co-wrote with Timmy Allen the chugging "(You're Putting) A Rush on Me," giving the singer her third number one R&B hit in fall 1987. The single with the instrumental version on the flip made it to number 85 pop and was included on her gold album If I Were Your Woman.

Laurence had several hits with Brooklyn singer/Capitol recording artist Lillo Thomas: "(You're A) Good Girl," "Your Love's Got a Hold on Me," "(Can't Take Half) All of You" (a duet with Melba Moore), "Settle Down," "Sexy Girl" (Laurence/Timmy Allen), "I'm in Love" -- not the Evelyn King hit -- that went to number two R&B in spring 1987, and "Wanna Make Love (All Night Long)."

With all of this success, Laurence was afforded the opportunity to become a recording artist. Signing with Capitol, Laurence's debut LP, the critically acclaimed Haven't You Heard, was released in late 1985. The first single, "She's Not a Sleaze," featured Freddie Jackson and Lillo Thomas and charted number 50 R&B in late 1985. Other singles for Laurence were "You Hooked Me," "Strung Out," "Make My Baby Happy," and "I Aint Wit It." Laurence also contributed to the soundtrack of the 1990 horror film Def By Temptation starring Kadeem Hardison of NBC-TV's Cosby Show spin-off A Different World. One of his songs, "Help Yourself to My Love," was recorded as a duet between Kashif and Kenny G.

Dionne Warwick Do You Know the Way to San Jose 1968 Top 10

Over 100 Dionne Warwick tracks with rare photos on Dibotis' Dionne Warwick Channel. Check them out! Dionne Warwick's 1968 million selling Grammy winning international smash hit the top ten in May 1968 and was also a UK smash at #8. The flip side "Let Me Be Lonely" also written by Bacharach and David also hit the Billboard Hot 100, one of many double sided hits Dionne recorded on Florence Greenberg's Scepter label. Dionne charted an astonishing eight Billboard Top Twenty hits in less than 30 months: Alfie-#15 July 67; I Say A Little Prayer-Nov 67-#4; Theme From Valley of the Dolls-Feb 68-#2 (4 weeks); Do You Know the Way to San Jose-May 68-#10; Promises, Promises-Oct 1968-#19; This Girl's In Love With You-March 1969-#7; You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling-#15-Sept 69; I'll Never Fall In Love Again-Jan 70-#6. In addition, Warwick hit the Top 40 in the same time period with Windows of the World-Sept 67, Who Is Gonna Love Me-July 68, and The April Fools-July 69. In 1969 Dionne was the first African-American Female Vocalist to win in the Grammy category Best Contemporary-Pop Vocal Performance, Female for Do You Know the Way to San Jose. "San Jose" was also used as the theme in Dodge automobile commercials in 1968 and 1969, for the Charger and the Challenger. "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" became "Dodge Is Turning Up the Fever Now"! Another note of trivia: the background vocalists for this session were Valerie Simpson (Ashford & Simpson), Cissy Houston and DeeDee Warwick.
Writes Nick Tosches, the renowned writer, music journalist, novelist, biographer and poet in the January 7, 1972 issue of the rock magazine FUSION; "...getting into Dionne Warwick is like finding buried treasure. The Bacharach/David repertoire which milady chooses to sing is so fascinatingly cynical / fatalistic / stoical / emotional / happy, simultaneously! It's pure emotion. There is a whole lot more to emotion than some rock punk bursting his dexedrine-staved blood vessels by screaming "Baby I need you baby" into a microphone. Dionne Warwick is not a rock and roll singer. She's not a jazz singer either. Rhythm and blues? Nope. A pop singer? No way. Did you ever tongue-kiss with someone who barfed a Singapore Sling bolus into your mouth, and then four years later you're with someone else and you feel good and you realize how beautiful it all was and then it's all melancholy/happiness, sort of? That's the kind of singer Dionne Warwick is. She's beautiful. Dionne, paired with Bacharach's string/horn/reed arrangements, comes up as a lyric mezzo-sopranoid par-excellence, melodious/expressiveness-wise. If you've never gotten into her, you ought to. Get hep to Dionne Warwick. For your own sake."
