The images are scorched into our collective memory. There were survivors carrying what belongings they could salvage, trekking through waist-high sewage in search of high ground; there were images of mothers carrying children and sons pushing fathers in wheelchairs; there were survivors on rooftops with signs held overhead pleading for supplies as helicopters flew past; and there was anguish at the Superdome. There was also the report of survivors, largely black in number, turned back by police at gunpoint on the Gretna Bridge as they sought dry land. There was the talk of being a "refugee" in your own country and the looting of abandoned shops and stores—all caught on camera.
And there was the constant question of "How could this happen here?"
Today marks the second anniversary of the Katrina disaster, and life amid the protracted rebuilding efforts remains a struggle for many hurricane survivors. But if one factor has been exacerbated by the devastation that nearly leveled New Orleans two years ago, it's the stark racial divide in the city that by many accounts is harsher today than ever.
Charges of political corruption, complaints from those still awaiting federal assistance, a sky-high crime rate and some devastated, mostly black areas that are still untouched by efforts to rebuild have left tensions in the city at an alarming high.

Former "The View" host Star Jones Reynolds has been accused of "stealing" from a Michigan non-profit organization after accepting plane tickets from them to party during the 2006 NFL Super Bowl.
The Detroit women's group, Full and Fabulous, a non-profit organization that helps plus-size women and girls cope with peer pressures, claim they invited the 45-year-old to speak at their Health, Beauty and Self-Esteem conference during the 2006 Super Bowl in Detroit.
They claim Jones Reynolds demanded a first-class airfare, a suite at a five-star hotel and $30,000 to show up.
The group tell Detroit TV station WXYZ how they bought Jones Reynolds -- a trained U.S. lawyer -- the airplane tickets to Detroit, which she then used to party during the Super Bowl weekend and to plug her book.
The TV star never showed up at the conference. However, Jones Reynolds' representative refutes the group's claims, branding them "distorted."
According to the spokesperson, Jones honored all contractual terms of the deal but the organization did not and have fabricated a fascinating story to make a meaningful name for themselves.

Celebrity Sex Tapes on "The Star Jones Show" on Court TV
Adult industry impresario Kevin Blatt on "The Star Jones Show" on
Court TV.
Blatt was invited on the show to speak about the legalities of
celebrity sex tapes, the stories behind their release and the public
relations benefit for celebrities looking to release them.
Blatt is no stranger to the celebrity sex tape world. He was the
marketing guru behind Red Light District's "1 Night in Paris" and
has been involved in the (unreleased) sex tapes of Cameron Diaz
and Colin Farrell.
Appearing alongside Blatt is Dustin "Screech" Diamond, the former
child star known for his role on "Saved By the Bell." Diamond
released a homemade sex tape earlier this year featuring himself
and two girls through Red Light District, titled "Screeched."
"[Star] is all over 2257 and wants to know about Paris' involvement
in her sex tape," Blatt told XBIZ. "After Star read about what the law
was she said 'that must mean you have to have a model release.' I
said 'Bingo!'"
In other Blatt news, a mainstream documentary about his aborted
reality show is releasing Sept. 11 on DVD. "American Cannibal"
enjoyed limited nationwide theatrical release, but gets new life on
DVD through Life Size Entertainment. Blatt also said Showtime has
picked up the movie and will air it in January 2008.
