1980 Tai Babilonia /Randy Gardner Exhibition-Atlanta
I realized I had not posted anything for Tai and Randy, America's most loved pair team, and one of only two World Champions. They did not skate well in the Atlanta Nationals, but came out in their usual good form for the exhibition. There is a videotape out there somewhere of them skating the practice session LP in Lake Placid. That would certainly be their definitive piece if someone could find it and post it. I thought I had it, but I haven't been able to come across it. They skated flawlessly and effortlessly just 24 hours before the unfortunate groin injury.

Babilonia & Gardner (USA) - 1978 Worlds, Pairs' LP
Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA. Tai Babilonia & Randy Gardner... 'enuf said. :-)
28 years later since their World title in 1979, they remain, still, the only American pair to win gold at Worlds. The U.S. had a few silver medal finishes, but if you watch the program, you'd probably agree that the silver we got in 1998 was more of a gift from the judges. Ramblings from those within, the Pairs judging in 1998 was flawed, much like the Ladies' event in 1992. I apologize for my ramblings.

1985 World Pros, Pairs' Event - Babilonia & Gardner
Landover, Maryland, USA - 1985 World Professional Figure Skating Championships, Pairs' Event - Tai Babilonia & Randy Gardner. Ah, the beauty of simple moves and spacing. It's great to enjoy considering how packed up the programs are these days. Back then, it was great to have some breathing room inbetween elements, and they were performed more slowly/taking their time so that we can enjoy the positions they get into in the spins and spirals and other moves in the field.

1992 US Nationals - Lisa Ervin
Most of us who watched Lisa Ervin skate were dumbfounded by the uncanny resemblance to her coach, Carol Heiss. The body line is so similar, and the style of movement, uniquely Heiss, right down to the toss of the head and the bouncing pony tail. I am not sure this is what coaches set out to achieve with their students; but then, I suppose there are only so many ways to core an apple, once you have polished the peel. This highly buffed American skating princess, probably sliced down by technical advancements in triple jumping during her competitive period, won a 4th in 1992 and a Silver medal in 1993, but faded from the scene in Seniors.
Using the music of "Spartacus" also brought remnicences of the 1973 Canadian World Champion, Karen Magnussen.

After Dark - Andy Gibb
Andy Gibb (March 5, 1958 -- March 10, 1988) was an English-born Australian singer and teen idol, and the youngest brother of Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, also known as the Bee Gees. He was noted for his good looks and vocal abilities.
Later in the year, Andy Gibb's Greatest Hits was released as a finale to his contract with RSO Records, with two new songs: "Time Is Time" (number 15 in January 1981) and "Me (Without You)" (Gibb's last Top Forty chart entry) shipped as singles. "After Dark" and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" were non single songs added to the album. The latter being a duet with PP Arnold, who had previously worked with Barry Gibb, including singing uncredited backups on, "Bury Me Down By The River" from Cucumber Castle.
A well-publicized affair with actress Victoria Principal ensued, while Gibb signed to several projects outside of the recording studio, including acclaimed performances in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on Broadway, Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance in Los Angeles, and a short-term stint as co-host of the television music show Solid Gold. However, as Gibb's drug use intensified, he was unable to commit to regular performances and tapings; he was eventually removed from each of said endeavors. His romance with Principal also ended a short time later, but not before recording and releasing a vanity duet of the Everly Brothers' classic "All I Have To Do Is Dream". This would be Gibb's last official single, and his last US chart entry, peaking at number 51. Although Gibb never publicly mentioned his disappointment with Victoria Principal and her alleged manipulation of Gibb's finances, his mother Barbara Gibb and his fans never forgave her. His family convinced him to seek treatment for his drug addiction; after a stint at the Betty Ford Clinic in the mid-1980s, Gibb toured small venues with a stage show of his greatest hits and covers, and appeared in guest-starring roles on several television situation comedies...notably Gimme A Break! and Punky Brewster. (He was actually engaged to actress Kari Michaelson, a star of the former, at the time of his death.) ((There is no foundation in any print from the Gibbs for the former claim that Andy was engaged to anyone at the time of his death, though earlier in the year he was linked to a couple of other ladies including Donna Rice, though briefly and before that briefly also Tai Babilonia.** His performances showed him to have (seemingly) recovered from his addiction. But although his performances in his new lifestyle were well-received, they failed to return him to the height of his past successes. Andy Gibb continued with an expansive and popular East Asia tour and regularly performed shows in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. He had a two-week engagement at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco during March of 1986. It was there that the best bootleg recording of his live performances was allegedly recorded. In 1987, with his debts far outweighing his income, Gibb was forced to declare bankruptcy. Determined to revive his recording career, Gibb returned to work alongside brothers Barry and Maurice. They produced a series of demo recordings, which would eventually secure him a contract with the UK branch of Island Records. One of the demos, "Man On Fire", was released posthumously on the 1991 Polydor anthology, Andy Gibb, while another demo, "Arrow Through The Heart", though unreleased to the present day, would be featured on an episode of VH1's series Behind the Music.
Gibb travelled to England to fulfill the label's request for more songs, moving into Brother brother Robin's mansion in Thame. He turned to drinking heavily, and fell ill. On March 7, 1988, Andy was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford complaining of stomach pains. Gibb died three days later of myocarditis, a sudden inflammation of the heart muscle caused by a viral infection. While his years of alcohol and cocaine abuse did not directly result in his death, they did aggravate the condition. [Info courtesy: wikipedia.org]
