Cameron Diaz's star power stands tall in Milton
How tall is Cameron Diaz? That was the seemed to be the most common question in Milton's Thompson Lane neighborhood Tuesday as the star of films such as "Something About Mary," ''Charlie's Angels'' and ''Gangs of New York,'' filmed scenes from ''The Box,'' directed by Richard Kelly.
To 12-year-old Cara Hogan, the actress' internationally debated height -- it's been reported at between 5-foot-9 and 6 feet -- is irrelevant. To her, Diaz is larger than life. "She's really awesome," Cara Hogan said. "She's really, really tall, too." Cara Hogan watched Diaz work all day Tuesday yesterday after being was allowed to skip play hooky from school to watch the shoot.
"It's not every day you have a movie being filmed on your street," she Hogan said. "It's not every day Cameron Diaz is next door." Cara's Hogan's house is next door to the home of Jim and Barbara Vaughn where Diaz has been hunkering down between scenes. The house and which will serve as the main characters' movie home. The Vaughns' red brick Colonial was chosen because it looks like a house that could be in Virginia, the setting for the movie. Filming is expected to continue all take place all day today.Wednesday and will break for Thanksgiving and Friday, possibly returning Monday if they don't get done what they need to Wed. The film is also being shot in Boston.
Crews are using the Glover Elementary School parking lot as an equipment staging area, and movie trailers have been parked on Cape Cod Lane and Frothingham Street. "The Box" stars Diaz and James Marsden are playing a troubled married couple who are given a magical box that grants them wishes of fame and fortune. But for the wishes to come true, an unknown person must die.
As she strode from the Vaughns' home , down the walkway to Thompson Lane to film a scene Tuesday, Diaz flipped her hair, flashed her million-dollar a smile and waved to a group of the handful of teenagers on the sidewalk across the street when her name was shouted.
Between takes, Diaz whistled and amused crew members who fluttered around her. "I'm a great whistler. I love whistling. All these things swirl around my head, so I whistle," Diaz said. "I can blow you away with my whistling," she said.
A group of teenage neighborhood boys seemed as much enthralled with Diaz as with the dozen or more 1970s-era cars being used as props, including a Corvette, Buick Riviera and Cadillac., from the 1970s parked on the street for authenticity for a shot.
Some residents, even a family dog, have been commandeered for small parts. Cara Hogan's Boston terrier, Joey, was enlisted and was filmed walking the tree- lined street on a leash with one of the extras. Cara's Hogan's father, Paul, a former school committee member, said the family won't know until the film comes out sometime next year if Joey's scene winds up in the film or in the trash. "We'll have to see if he makes the cut," Hogan said.
